'Echolilia/Sometimes I Wonder' by Timothy Archibald

Curious to get inside the mind of his autistic child, a father started capturing his unique quirks and habits on camera.

San Francisco-based photographer Timothy Archibald, turned the lens on his son, Elijah, now 12, six years ago and published the intimate collection of images in a book titled 'Echolilia/Sometimes I Wonder'.

One shot shows the child sat naked on a bed with a giant envelope over his head and another sees him with his face plunged into the mouth of a large plastic funnel.

Lara Zankoul - The Unseen

© 2012 Lara Zankoul - All Right Reserved
Born in Lebanon in 1987, Lara Zankoul graduated from the American University of Beirut with a Masters in Economics. Zankoul was born photographically in 2008. Driven by passion, she taught herself photography and started an enriching journey in the artistic field. During 2009, she completed her 365 project, a personal mission in which she committed on taking a picture every day in a row for a year. She has participated in several local and international collective exhibitions such as the ‘Women’s Art Exhibition’ in Art Lounge Lebanon in 2011 and the 3rd edition of the Festival Photomed in the South of France in 2013. Part of the Shabab Ayyam incubator programme, she was an award recipient at the 2011 Shabab Ayyam Photography Competition. In her solo show in Ayyam Gallery in January 2013, she presented for the first time, her cinematographic work, which was auctioned in April 2013 at Christie’s Dubai.

Zankoul’s practice of fine arts photography primarily appeared as a need to escape the binding life of the cubicle during her first full-time job. This need to evade reality was translated in her imagery: her compositions are contemporary fairy tales, which explore the charm and mystery of the human psyche. Whimsical and playful, they represent an attempt to invent new worlds, to push against the boundaries of our reality and escape the monotony of everyday life. The characters inhabiting Zankoul’s work are anonymous and timeless, universal symbols existing within a fantastical and surreal landscape.

Simon Menner. Top Secret Images from the Archives of the Stasi

First publication of pictures from the archives of the Stasi, the East German secret police.

Almost 300,000 people worked for the East German secret police, per capita far more than were employed by agencies such as the CIA or the KGB. Not quite fifty years after the Berlin Wall was built, Simon Menner (*1978 in Emmendingen) discovered spectacular photographs in the Stasi archives that document the agency’s surveillance work. Formerly secret, highly official photographs show officers and employees putting on professional uniforms, gluing on fake beards, or signaling to each other with their hands. Today, the sight of them is almost ridiculous, although the laughter sticks in the viewer’s throat. This publication can be regarded as a visual processing of German history and an examination of current surveillance issues, yet it is extremely amusing at the same time. The fact that the doors of the opposite side—the British or German intelligence services, for example—remained closed to the artist lends the theme an explosive force as well as a tinge of absurdity.

Wystawa ''2m 2 Mody'' w Lookout Gallery/The exhibition 2 m² of Fashion

2m2 Mody, Iza Grzybowska

Miasto: Warszawa
Lokalizacja: Lookout GALLERY
Ulica: Puławska 41/lok. 22
Termin: 17.01.2014 – 22.02.2014

Osiemnastu artystów i szesnaście inspiracji wizualnych.

2 m² of FASHION
17.01-22.02.2014

ARTISTS: Szymon Brodziak, Sebastian Cviq, Kuba Dąbrowski, Przemek Dzienis, Karol Grygoruk, Iza Grzybowska, Irenka Kalicka, Marcin Kempski, Agnieszka Kulesza & Łukasz Pik, Diana Lelonek & Mateusz Cyrankowski, Magdalena Ławniczak, Weronika Ławniczak, Adam Pluciński, Agata Pospieszyńska, Mateusz Stankiewicz, Łukasz Ziętek

OPENING: Thursday, January 16, 2014

The idea of 2 m² of Fashion is to show the new developments in the area of young Polish fashion photography. The exhibition displays works of artists who seldom appear in galleries, but instead successfully publish their photographs in large-circulation glossy magazines and work on advertising photo sessions, often for worldwide campaigns. Alongside with them we present a group of artists who use the language of fashion to create their own visual narrations and to construct aesthetic expressions. Thus, the exhibition presents renowned photographers together with those at the beginning of their careers.

2 m² of Fashion is composed of identical units. In order not to discriminate against or favor anyone, each participant was given the same space to manage: a rectangle measuring one meter by two meters – hence also the exhibition’s title.
Eighteen artists and sixteen visual inspirations. Among those we find conceptual and critical artworks, single prints reminiscent of painting, short series, collages, portraits and videos. You will also have the chance to see fashion photo shoots taken out of their usual context and placed in the gallery. As David La Chapelle, one of the most remarkable contemporary photographers, once observed, magazines are like new art galleries, and the biggest compliment paid to him as an artist is when someone pulls his photo out of a magazine and sticks it to the fridge.
Some of the prints displayed in the exhibition come from the backstage of the fashion industry. They are the products of tests, trials and behind-the-scenes shots from professional photo sessions. These situations hide the greatest creative potential of fashion photography. The time when the assignment ends and the fun between the photographer, stylist and model begins – this kind of photos we intend to show.
The exhibition 2 m² of Fashion has been displayed in its first version during the 8th Biennale of Photography in Poznań in the Siłownia Gallery (15 November 2013 – 15 December 2013).

A conversation between leading academics and artists investigating questions around self-portraiture and personal identity, alongside presentations of works by emerging and established photographic artists.
Philosophers have often linked personal identity to memory: it is suggested that we continue to be the same person as long as our memory with past events persist. But are memories unchanging, or even objective accounts of our experience that are stored in a glass bell? Or can memories be curated to fit a desirable image of the self?

Wernisażowi towarzyszyć będzie premiera albumu.

„Najbardziej interesują mnie punkty styku cywilizacji z naturą” - mówi Kowalski. „To tam dzieją się ciekawe rzeczy: zaburzenie harmonii, powstawanie nowych form”. „Efekty Uboczne" to podniebna podróż do źródła trudnych relacji pomiędzy człowiekiem a środowiskiem. Kowalski pokazuje, jak ludzie zmieniają środowisko, w którym żyją i jak ono się przed tym broni.

Kacper Kowalski z zawodu architekt, specjalizuje się w fotografii z lotu ptaka i jest obecnie jednym z najlepszych na świecie lotników-fotografów. Zdjęcia wykonuje z pokładu wiatrakowca. Pokazuje niedostępne na co dzień naturalne pejzaże i krajobrazy miejskie. Zdobył nagrody takie jak World Press Photo w 2009 roku w kategorii „Arts and Entertainment”, Grand Press Photo, International Photography Award, National Geograhic, Sony World Photography Award.

Opening reception: Kacper Kowalski, “Side Effects”
10.01. – 04.02.2014 Leica Gallery

Please join us for the opening reception of the long-awaited exhibition Kacper Kowalski, “Side Effects.” Kowalski, the winner of World Press Photo, a photographer and a pilot, next to his well known and widely acclaimed works, will present new photographs, all in striking formats.

The opening reception will be accompanied by Kowalski’s photobook premiere.

“What interest me the most are intersection points of society and nature – says Kowalski – it is where interesting things happen: disorder in harmony, emergence of new forms.” “Side Effects” presents a sky-high journey to the core of the complicated human-nature relationship. Kowalski demonstrates how human race changes the environment and how the nature fights back against this influence.

With a degree in architecture, Kowalski focuses on aerial photography. He is nowadays one of world’s best pilot photographers; taking his shots from a paraglider he captures previously unseen natural environments and normally inaccessible cityscapes. However, these are not merely pretty pictures.
“When flying, I cannot build a relationship with people the way it is in classical photography. I look at forests, fields and lakes. I look at natural catastrophes and I watch people taking rest – what I see is a portrait of civilization.”
For his images he’s received numerous awards, including the World Press Photo award in 2009 (Arts and Entertainment category), Grand Press Photo award, International Photography Award (IPA), Sony World Photography Award.

All the photographs presented at the exhibition and in the book are available for sale at Leica Gallery Warsaw and www.6x7art.com
