Zofia Chomętowska. Albumy fotografki 

Archiwum fotografii Zofii Chomętowskiej znajduje się dziś w dwóch zbiorach – Muzeum Warszawy (zdjęcia stolicy przedwojennej, wojennej i tużpowojennej) oraz Fundacji Archeologia Fotografii (zdjęcia z rodzinnego Polesia oraz z życia na emigracji w Argentynie).

W nowym, wspólnym wydawnictwie obu instytucji archiwum zostało scalone, by po raz pierwszy w pełni ukazać niezwykły życiorys Chomętowskiej – fotografki, kobiety niezależnej, odważnej i nowoczesnej. Publikacja składa się z 597 zdjęć zebranych w czterech albumach: Entuzjastka (1912–1935), Profesjonalistka (1936–1944), Dokumentalistka (1945) i Emigrantka (1946–1981). Odsłaniają one kolejne etapy biografii i silnie z nią związanej twórczości artystki, warunkowanej realiami politycznymi oraz poszukiwaniem odpowiadających im środków wyrazu. Podjęty przez autorki trud identyfikacji osób i miejsc utrwalonych na zdjęciach wydobywa rozmach, z jakim żyła aktywna zawodowo, atrakcyjna towarzysko, kosmopolityczna arystokratka oraz ukazuje dynamiczny fresk historyczny rozpięty pomiędzy Prochońskiem, Warszawą i Buenos Aires, obejmujący blisko siedemdziesiąt lat.

'Echolilia/Sometimes I Wonder' by Timothy Archibald

Curious to get inside the mind of his autistic child, a father started capturing his unique quirks and habits on camera.

San Francisco-based photographer Timothy Archibald, turned the lens on his son, Elijah, now 12, six years ago and published the intimate collection of images in a book titled 'Echolilia/Sometimes I Wonder'.

One shot shows the child sat naked on a bed with a giant envelope over his head and another sees him with his face plunged into the mouth of a large plastic funnel.

Simon Menner. Top Secret Images from the Archives of the Stasi

First publication of pictures from the archives of the Stasi, the East German secret police.

Almost 300,000 people worked for the East German secret police, per capita far more than were employed by agencies such as the CIA or the KGB. Not quite fifty years after the Berlin Wall was built, Simon Menner (*1978 in Emmendingen) discovered spectacular photographs in the Stasi archives that document the agency’s surveillance work. Formerly secret, highly official photographs show officers and employees putting on professional uniforms, gluing on fake beards, or signaling to each other with their hands. Today, the sight of them is almost ridiculous, although the laughter sticks in the viewer’s throat. This publication can be regarded as a visual processing of German history and an examination of current surveillance issues, yet it is extremely amusing at the same time. The fact that the doors of the opposite side—the British or German intelligence services, for example—remained closed to the artist lends the theme an explosive force as well as a tinge of absurdity.

"Around the World in 125 Years" by National Geographic archive

With more than 11 million images in the National Geographic archives, there is one image that resonates with Maura Mulvihill, senior vice president and director of the National Geographic Society’s image collection. While diving off the Auckland Islands in 2007, the photographer Brian Skerry and his assistant had a chance encounter with the nearly extinct Southern Right whale.
The allure of the image is in its simplicity: two subjects, one whale, one man, floating in a vastness of blue while inquisitively staring at each other face to face.

This image, along with a collection of more than 900 images from the National Geographic archive, have been published in a new book, "Around the World in 125 Years."

On top of that, Agnes Sire has dug up many unknown Larrains that are as good as the ones we know and love. The ever enterprising RM Verlag publishers have come up with another gem here: PIGS, which stands for Portugal, Italy, Greece and Spain, the near bankrupt European countries. The format, based on the graphics of The Economist, is used to house the images of the above countries that are starting to fray at the edges.

W ubiegłym roku (2011) Kudela zaistniała jako street artist na rynku polskim serią murali "Renesansowy Street Art" na warszawskiej Pradze. Głównym założeniem projektu było odtworzenie 10 arcydzieł światowego malarstwa przy współudziale współczesnych mieszkańców miasta.

Projekt był częścią powstałego pod egidą Ministerstwa Kultury i Dziedzictwa Narodowego przedsięwzięcia Jacka Schmidta „Otwarta pracownia wizytująca – znaki miasta". Każda z prac Kudeli była kolażem, w którym oryginalne fragmenty popularnego obrazu wkomponowane zostały w fotografie współczesnych.

To zderzenie renesansowego neoplatonizmu, który chciał poprowadzić ludzi ku szczęściu przez miłość i piękno, z warszawską Pragą, dzielnicą zakodowaną w zbiorowej, miejskiej świadomości jako miejsce złe i niebezpieczne.Zmiana kontekstu dzieł miała z jednej strony charakter prowokacji, a z drugiej osadziła projekt w bardzo konkretnej przestrzeni praskiej.

Na przykład w „Wiośnie", będącej przetworzeniem obrazu Boticellego, w rolę trzech Gracji wcieliły się trzy pensjonariuszki praskiego Domu Dziennego Pobytu.

Dla Kudeli istotne są reakcje widzów – przechodniów, mieszkańców światowych metropolii i współartystów zajmujących się street artem - na rozklejone w przestrzeni urbanistycznej prace. Ich reakcje dokumentowała we wcześniejszych projektach w Paryżu, a rezultaty stały się kolejnym ciekawym „projektem w projekcie". - Wychodząc do miasta – mówi Kudela – przede wszystkim wychodzę do widza, szeroko rozumianego odbiorcy. - Używam miasta jako swoistej galerii i staram się nawiązać dialog intelektualny z potencjalnym odbiorcą moich prac. Ale równocześnie ściany, domy, ulice, architektura miasta oraz jego mieszkańcy są przedłużeniem moich obrazów i ich integralną częścią. Staram się aby moje obrazy były spójne z miejscem i wnosiły w nie nowe wartości estetyczne - opowiada artystka.

Irena Jarosińska Pismo obrazkowe/Irena Jarosińska Picture Writing

Irena Jarosińska: pismo obrazkowe to album prezentujący twórczość jednej z najciekawszych polskich fotografek XX wieku – artystki i pionierki fotoreportażu kobiecego. Jarosińska (1924–1996) była silną i niezależną osobowością artystyczną, fotoreporterką m.in. prestiżowych pism „Świat” i „Polska”, inicjatorką wielu wystaw, happeningów i dyskusji, mentorką młodych fotografów. Jej ogromna spuścizna fotograficzna, licząca ponad 40 tysięcy zdjęć, po latach zapomnienia trafiła do Archiwum Fotografii Ośrodka KARTA.

W albumie zostały zaprezentowane trzy główne wątki twórczości Jarosińskiej. Była zawodowo i prywatnie związana ze środowiskiem artystycznym: portretowała poetów, malarzy awangardowych, aktorów, fotografów i muzyków. Przez kilka dekad była w samym centrum życia kulturalnego, z jednej strony śledząc je jako fotografka, a z drugiej współtworząc. Jeden z rozdziałów albumu (Na temat) został osnuty wokół miejsc ważnych dla polskiego życia artystycznego – skupiających twórców różnych dziedzin, jak np. mieszkanie-pracownia malarza Henryka Stażewskiego, a także teatry Tadeusza Kantora czy Mirona Białoszewskiego.

Równolegle w albumie zostało pokazane, równie osobiste, spojrzenie artystki na przestrzeń Warszawy lat 50. (rozdział Fragmentaryczność). Jarosińska była czujną obserwatorką, wykraczającą daleko poza tworzenie dokumentacji fotograficznej – stąd w albumie wątek frapujących migawek z życia ulic, zamykanych w kadrach pozornej codzienności.

Dopełnieniem obrazu twórczości Jarosińskiej są zdjęcia z jej pracy fotoreporterskiej (rozdział Na temat) – formy bardziej narracyjne, powstające na zlecenie redakcji czasopism, nie pozbawione przy tym wrażliwości charakteryzującej jej „prywatne” fotografie.

W albumie znalazły się również teksty autorstwa znakomitych fotografów i krytyków: Chrisa Niedenthala, Tadeusza Rolke, Anki Ptaszkowskiej i Kuby Dąbrowskiego, poświęcone twórczości Ireny Jarosińskiej oraz różnym aspektom fotografii i życia artystycznego okresu PRL.

GUP about a book - Rafal Milach "Black Sea"

Rafal Milach photographs the concrete heaven of the southern Ukrainian coastline in his book Black Sea Concrete. 

The visual journey of Rafal Milach’s self-published book Black Sea of Concrete begins with the cover: a front to back, full-bleed photograph of a painted mural of the Black Sea. Although the wall art portrays the warmth of the sea and sky, there’s rust bleeding through the cracks in the concrete canvas. The enclosed series of photographs shows the southern Ukrainian coastline, an area frequented by vacationers from around the Soviet Union, and yet, Milach chooses not to present the beautiful seaside view marketed as the Crimean dream.

David Campany "Gasoline" - recenzja Fotopolis

"Gasoline" to publikacja stworzona z archiwalnych fotografii, zgromadzonych przez Davida Campany. Tematem przewodnim zdjęć pochodzących z magazynów amerykańskich gazet są stacje benzynowe. Książka ukazała się nakładem wydawnictwa Mack w 2013 roku.

Zdjęcie na okładce książki przedstawia kobietę z głową opartą na kierownicy. Uwagę zwraca bogactwo szczegółów i malarski charakter tego obrazu, który może kojarzyć się z hiperrealizmem. Z wywiadu, który przeprowadził z autorem George Kaplan dowiadujemy się, że jest to zdjęcie poddane retuszowi, które przedstawia kobietę czekającą w kolejce po benzynę. To ono spowodowało, że David Campany rozpoczął pracę nad książką "Gasoline".

Another Family - support for publishing fotobook

Another Family is a project by photographer Irina Popova.It is about a difficult punk family with a little daughter. The book needs help to get published.

the presumption of innocence

This story started in 2008 when i got an assignment to make a project about FEELINGS.
I was wandering through the streets of st petesburg at night and there i met Lilya, a punk girl, who was completely drunk. She was pushing a baby carriage with her little daughter inside. I asked if I could take a photo and ended up at their small messy room in a communal flat, where her boyfriend and a few other people partied for many days non stop. Their two-year old girl was crawling all around. I stayed there for a considerable period of time, documenting their life and concentrating my attention on the world of the little girl. I became more or less part of their life. That's why the story became very personal like a diary. I was proposed to make an exhibition in St. Petersburg, they came to the opening as well. The next day the publication with the photos became viral on the internet.  The parents were accused of abuse, and criminal investigation has started. I refused to be a witness in the case.
The story raised several important questions. Should a photographer be only a witness to what is happening in front of his lens, or does he have a moral obligation to change the situation? I continue to visit the family and watch the girl grow older. Two years later, the girl was still living with her father, while the mother had completely disappeared from their life. This story had a great impact on me as a photographer and a person.
Besides the pictures I collected different materials related to this story, letters, comments from the internet and personal diaries. I used these materials in a book. Publisher Maarten Schilt was inspired by the story and decided to publish a book. Together with a graphic designer Victor Levi we worked on the book for almost two years. Now the book is ready for print. It will be a beautiful full-color 200 page book with a hardcover. In order to make this publication a reality I need your financial support.

The Project

In Via PanAm, Kadir van Lohuizen investigates the roots of migration in the Americas. By seeking answers to questions such as 'Why do people migrate? Where to and for what reasons? What is the fate of the different indigenous populations in the Americas Van Lohuizen taps into a phenomenon which is as old as humanity but is increasingly portrayed as a new threat to the Western world.

Travelling 40,000 km along the Pan-American Highway and crossing through 15 countries, Van Lohuizen visualised the stories of the communities, regions and societies he encountered. With Via PanAm, he wants to shed a light on this 'forgotten' region, and create a better understanding of the phenomenon of migration. In his own engaged and compelling way, he does this by focusing on the people involved. Their stories show their strength and their vulnerability, the variety of motivations they have, the roads they travel and the (often informal) infrastructures they enter into.

After the innovative multi-media iPad app and a traveling exhibition, Van Lohuizen's work will now be compiled into a book. This unique publication takes the reader along through the changing landscapes of the countries he travelled and zooms in on the lives of the people he encountered. The book also includes an essay by acclaimed Colombian writer Juan Gabriel Vásquez.

In an inventive design by Teun van der Heijden (Heijdens Karwei), mixing colour, black and white pictures and texts on pages of different sizes, the book provides a unique, high-quality closure to Van Lohuizen's impressive project.

Kadir van Lohuizen (1963) has covered conflicts in Africa and elsewhere, but is probably best known for his projects on the seven rivers of the world (Aderen/Rivers of the World) and the diamond industry (Diamond Matters). He has received numerous prizes for his work, including two World Press Photo awards. In 2007, he and nine others established the agency NOOR Images.

Cykl łączy różnorodne punkty widzenia, pomyślane i ułożone w jedną, nielinearną perspektywę szczególnego miasta jakim jest dziś Nowy Jork.
