Don't miss out on the colorful street photography of Gustavo Minas from Sao Paulo on the blog today! by Eric Kim Photography

Gustavo Minas is a street photographer based in Sao Paulo, Brazil and part of the Street-Photographers and the SelvaSP collective.
Gustavo: Hi there, I’m a 32 years old guy born in Cassia, a small town in Brazilian countryside, now living in Sao Paulo. I first got interested in photography during my journalism course at uni, around 2001. Maybe a bit earlier, as I drew a lot as a child, roughly, and photographed school parties with a point and shoot.

After university, I lived in London for 1 year, working as a waiter and just spending time. I bought a handycam with miniDV tapes and started filming everything around, later editing with Windows Movie Maker. I was inspired by those late boring Godard movies, which are mostly about apparently random images. These were the origins of my street photography, as the process was about the same – wandering alone and watching people.

‘Finding Vivian Maier’ Explores a Mysterious Photographer (by Manohla Dargis)

The photographer Vivian Maier, shown here in an undated self-portrait, is the subject of the documentary “Finding Vivian Maier.” Now widely considered an exceptional photographer, her talent went largely unrecognized in her lifetime. Some of her work is on the following slides. Vivian Maier/Maloof Collection

The Nanny as Sphinx, Weaving Enigmatic Magic on the Sly

It’s no surprise that Maier is now the subject of a documentary, given the quality of her work, the nominal exoticism of her life and the secrets that still drift around her. She’s a terrific story — part Mary Poppins, part Weegee — who was at once emancipated and in service. She was introduced to the world, as it were, by John Maloof, one of this movie’s directors, who bought a box of her negatives at a Chicago auction in 2007 for about $400. The auction house, he explains, told him the work was by Maier, but he found nothing about her on Google. He had purchased the negatives for a book he was working on, but after deciding that they were of no use, he stashed the box away.

In Photography, Cool Rules By JOHN LELAND

Marlon Brando
Philippe Halsman

The thing about “cool” is that it shows itself equally in moments of distress or pleasure, driving people indifferently to greatness or stupidity. It comes from gritty streets and prices out the people who live there; it pulls couples together or cleaves them apart. And even as its meaning dissipates from overuse, you still can’t talk about Miles Davis without mentioning it.
Cool is, in short, a story about America, full of contradictions and unresolved riddles, a mask that often reveals more than the face beneath it.
You won’t find it preserved under glass at the Smithsonian – except that, ahem, it is now on display at the museum’s National Portrait Gallery in Washington, in a parade of images that say a lot about how the nation sees itself when it pretends everybody is looking. They are also pretty cool. (Or, as the art historian Robert Farris Thompson categorizes in his essay “An Aesthetic of the Cool,” it’s a “metaphor of moral aesthetic accomplishment.”)

Anita Andrzejewska - uważna fotografia podróżnicza /Olga Drenda/

Photographer Anita Andrzejewska
Oszczędny, czarno-biały charakter zdjęć wywodzi się z grafiki. Anita Andrzejewska stworzyła swój własny styl fotografii podróżniczej - uważny i medytacyjny...

Fotografujesz prawie wyłącznie w czerni i bieli - dlaczego?

Lubię oszczędne środki wyrazu i szlachetność tradycyjnej techniki srebrowej.

Paolo Roversi - Grazie Paolo! by Bownik

Capa in Color

photographs by Robert Capa
This exhibition presents Robert Capa’s color work for the first time. Capa regularly used color film from the 1940s until his death in 1954. Some of these photographs were published in magazines of the day, but the majority have never been printed, seen, or even studied. Over the years, this aspect of Capa’s career has virtually been forgotten. With over 100 contemporary color prints by the famous photojournalist, Capa in Color presents this work an integral part of his post-war career and fundamental in remaining relevant to magazines. Drawn entirely from ICP’s collection, including contextual publications and personal papers, the exhibition presents a fascinating new look at this master of black-and-white photography during his centennial year. This exhibition is organized by ICP Curator Cynthia Young.

Street Photo w Londynie - warsztaty wyjazdowe z Damianem Chrobakiem

Photo Damian Chrobak
Londyńskie warsztaty autorskie, prowadzone przez założyciela grupy un-posed (http://un-posed.com/) Damiana Chrobaka , będą niepowtarzalną okazją na przeżycie ciekawej przygody rozwijającej warsztat i świadomość fotograficzną każdego fotografa ulicznego. Fotografie uliczną cechuje ogromna wrażliwość estetyczna oraz psychologiczna i socjologiczna przenikliwość. Fotograf wyławia z otaczającego go biegu zdarzeń momenty pozornie nieistotne i odkrywa ich szczególne znaczenie. Podczas 3 dniowych warsztatów w stolicy Anglii poznamy tajniki fotografii ulicznej.

Termin:
13 – 15.06 2014 (piątek/sobota/niedziela)

An Interview with Sputnik’s Rafał Milach and Ania Nałęcka

© Sputnik Photos, Agnieszka Rayss – U

For almost ten years, the photo collective Sputnik has focused on Post-Soviet countries, in search of personal stories instead of ‘hot news issues’. The nine photographers of the collective include winners of many awards, such as World Press Photos and Pictures of the Year. Founding member Rafał Milach, along with his partner Ania Nałęcka, who designs all of Sputnik’s books, were in Utrecht for the opening of Sputnik’s exhibition at Fotodok, the first exhibition dedicated entirely to the collective. They sat down with GUP to talk about Sputnik’s start, photo books as a slow medium and how they learned to work together as a couple.

Sputnik unofficially started in 2004 when Polish photographer Rafał Milach (b. 1978) went to a workshop in France, where he met other photographers from Eastern and Central Europe. “Funnily enough, we met in France for the first time. Most of us were from Warsaw, but we didn’t even know each other,” Rafał says while taking a break from building up his exhibition at Fotodok. Sitting in the brightly lit office, he sometimes gets up and runs over to take a book from the shelves, to illustrate what he’s talking about. The participants from that workshop in 2004 got along better than any of them could’ve expected, he says. “It was mostly the energy that we felt," Rafał explains. "During the workshop, we discussed methods and edits. And we hung out. We didn’t even really work together that first time, but it was an intense and important time for all of us. During one of those late night dinners, while freely discussing ideas, it turned out that everybody was passionate about working together. Someone proposed the name Sputnik. That name is related with transmission and we wanted the collective to be our personal broadcast, filling the gaps that mainstream media forget about. Our main focus would be on Post-Soviet countries, where we all come from. Even though we didn’t know each other yet, we felt this energy between us. Sometimes you meet people and you know that you could work with them. So we decided to give it a try.

Secrets Of The Best Levitation Shots Shared

fstoppers dani diamond how to shoot pictures of people floating levitation3c1 710x1163 Secrets Of The Best Levitation Shots Shared

The first time I saw a levitation shot, I stared at it for 15 minutes in astonishment. I could not conceive how the image was captured; I was captivated by the story it conveyed, it was surreal, magical and awe-inspiring. Conceptualizing the image and executing it can prove to be rather difficult and meticulous. Thankfully, photographers who have mastered the techniques involved in levitating have decided to share their secrets with us.
