The Coventry Peace Festival returns for another year to celebrate Coventry's unique role as a City of Peace, Reconciliation and Equality.

Marta Kochanek Photography and Barbara Gibson PHOTOGRAPHY present two collaborative photographic exhibitions celebrating cultural diversity in the unusual location of the derelict Artspace basement. "Inner Pageant" examines external perceptions of the Drag Queen in relation to lesser seen inner emotions. "We Love We Make We Exist" looks at homosexual parenting and studies the homosexual family.

The centre of Athens, as I first remember it, was full of life. During the period before the Olympic Games, there was great development. New hotels appeared in order to host the visitors, shops, restaurants and cafes kept sprouting out, it was full of people everywhere. All this happened within a few years. It was as if the city put on new clothes. During the days of the Olympics, the city was clean and well-guarded. You would not see street-merchants, drug-addicts or immigrants, just tourists and people who came in order to have a good time. In my eyes, it looked like another place.

The Project

In Via PanAm, Kadir van Lohuizen investigates the roots of migration in the Americas. By seeking answers to questions such as 'Why do people migrate? Where to and for what reasons? What is the fate of the different indigenous populations in the Americas Van Lohuizen taps into a phenomenon which is as old as humanity but is increasingly portrayed as a new threat to the Western world.

Travelling 40,000 km along the Pan-American Highway and crossing through 15 countries, Van Lohuizen visualised the stories of the communities, regions and societies he encountered. With Via PanAm, he wants to shed a light on this 'forgotten' region, and create a better understanding of the phenomenon of migration. In his own engaged and compelling way, he does this by focusing on the people involved. Their stories show their strength and their vulnerability, the variety of motivations they have, the roads they travel and the (often informal) infrastructures they enter into.

After the innovative multi-media iPad app and a traveling exhibition, Van Lohuizen's work will now be compiled into a book. This unique publication takes the reader along through the changing landscapes of the countries he travelled and zooms in on the lives of the people he encountered. The book also includes an essay by acclaimed Colombian writer Juan Gabriel Vásquez.

In an inventive design by Teun van der Heijden (Heijdens Karwei), mixing colour, black and white pictures and texts on pages of different sizes, the book provides a unique, high-quality closure to Van Lohuizen's impressive project.

Kadir van Lohuizen (1963) has covered conflicts in Africa and elsewhere, but is probably best known for his projects on the seven rivers of the world (Aderen/Rivers of the World) and the diamond industry (Diamond Matters). He has received numerous prizes for his work, including two World Press Photo awards. In 2007, he and nine others established the agency NOOR Images.

Medhi: Today’s society is definitely over equipped/ flooded with many different types and genres of technological gadgets for all sort of necessities. Photography has become an essential tool of proof and evidence, showing, duplicating a moment and emotion by capturing the exact frame, reflecting it, and documenting it all at once.

It is a shame that only a minority of enthusiasts have awakened to explore, document every emotion, segment of reality and life in a creative sense to bring us closer together, to share our love in a sentimental picture, and in a matter of established fact.

Marcin Suder uciekł porywaczom w Syrii! Fotograf jest już w Polsce

Marcin Suder, polski fotoreporter porwany przez islamskich bojowników w północnozachodniej Syrii, jest już Polsce. Informacje podał Radosław Sikorski na Twitterze. - Fotoreporter sam uciekł z niewoli. Miał ogromne szczęście, ogromne - podkreśla w rozmowie z TOK FM rzecznik MSZ Marcin Wojechowski.

"Marcin Suder już w ojczyźnie. Jeszcze raz, kategorycznie przestrzegam przed podróżami wbrew ostrzeżeniom", napisał na Twitterze minister spraw zagranicznych Radosław Sikorski. Jak podaje TOK FM, Marcin Suder sam uciekł z niewoli. - Jest w Polsce, bezpieczny z rodziną, miał dużo szczęścia, uciekł z niewoli, a Polska pomogła mu w powrocie do kraju - mówi Marcin Wojciechowski. Rzecznik MSZ również przestrzega przed wyjazdami do Syrii.

 

Jeszcze przez kilka dni nie zobaczymy Sudera w mediach, podaje TOK FM.

Marcin Suder pracował m.in. dla francuskiej agencji fotograficznej Corbis i polskiego Studio Melon. W Syrii pracował sam. Według informacji agencji Reutera został uprowadzony 24 lipca z biura prasowego sił opozycyjnych w mieście Sarakib na północnym zachodzie kraju.
Specjalny zespół MSZ

Po jego uprowadzeniu w polskim MSZ powołano specjalny zespół, który zajmował się sprawą porwanego Polaka.

Suder ma 34 lata, fotografią zajmuje się od kilkunastu lat. Wykonuje fotografię portretową, reklamową, lecz prawdziwą jego pasją jest fotografia społeczna i wojenna. Realizował fotoreportaże w kilkudziesięciu państwach, m.in. w Afganistanie, Birmie, Czeczenii, Indiach, Iranie, Kaszmirze, Kongo, Palestynie, Ruandzie, Sierra Leone, Sudanie. Na co dzień pracuje dla agencji Melon i Corbis. Przez kilka lat był wykładowcą w pracowni fotoreportażu w Akademii Fotografii.

Yesterday I was at the meeting with  Damian Chrobak.
How to understand the phenomenon of street photography? What characterises a good street photo? What are the most frequent traps street photographers fall into? Does street photography make sense? They are only some of the questions Damian Chrobak (doc! #13) - founder and the key person of un-posed, the most known Polish street photography collective - answered.

The doc! talks meetings are organised in collaboration with the Institute of Reportage Foundation. Their aim is to promote contemporary photojournalism and documentary photography.

Gościem przedostatniego w tym roku spotkania z serii Warszawskich Spotkań z Fotografią Dokumentalną będzie Oiko Peteresen. Spotkanie "Zobaczyć innego" odbędzie się 4 listopada, o godz. 19.00 w warszawskim klubie Powiększenie.

Oiko Petersen to polski dokumentalista młodego pokolenia, autor wystaw Guys. From Poland With Love i Downtown poświęconych szeroko rozumianej inności.
Ukończył studia językoznawcze na Uniwersytecie Warszawskim oraz fotografię na londyńskim University of the Arts. Debiutował w 2007 roku wystawą „Guys. From Poland with love”, która została pokazana podczas Szóstego Fotofestiwalu w Łodzi. Petersen znalazł się także w gronie piętnastu najciekawszych młodych, polskich fotografów, zakwalifikowanych do projektu PhotoPoland przygotowanego wspólnie z Instytutem Mickiewicza. Jego prace pokazywane były m.in. w warszawskim CSW w
ramach wystawy „Efekt czerwonych oczu. Fotografia polska XXI wieku” oraz na wielu międzynarodowych festiwalach fotograficznych, m.in. we Francji (Transphotographique '09), Finlandii (Backlight '08) i w Chinach (Pingyao International Photography Festival).

Moderatorem spotkania będzie Andrzej Zygmuntowicz - szef Rady Artystycznej ZPAF i Akademii fotoreportażu. Spotkanie z Chrisem Niedenthalem jest piątym z siedmiu zaplanowanych tegorocznych spotkań. Dotychczas odbyło się spotkanie z Kubą Dąbrowskim, Tomaszem Lazarem, Tomaszem Wiechem, Mikołajem Grynbergiem i Chrisem Niedenthalem. Zaplanowane jest jeszcze jedno spotkanie:
- 9 grudnia Andrzej Wiktor, Między rzeczywistością a inscenizacją, czyli o współczesnym dokumencie. Fotoreporter związany przez lata z dziennikiem Rzeczpospolita, obecnie wolny strzelec zajmujący się dokumentem i portretem; laureat nagród na najważniejszych polskich konkursach fotografii prasowej.

W 2011 i 2012 odbyły się dwie edycje Warszawskich Spotkań z Fotografią Dokumentalną (11 spotkań) z udziałem: Filipa Ćwika, Maćka Nabrdalika, Macieja Jeziorka, Agnieszki Rayss, Jana Brykczyńskiego, Włodzimierzem Krzemińskim, Wojciecha Grzędzińskiego, Przemysława Pokryckiego, Doroty Awiorko-Klimek, Macieja Pisuka i Anny Bedyńskiej.

Partnerem projektu jest klub Powiększenie oraz Centrum Druku i Kopiowania. Patronat medialny objęli: PDF, Akademia fotoreportażu, fotografuj.pl, empiktofo.pl

Zadanie „Warszawskie spotkania z fotografią dokumentalną – Zwierciadła czy okna” jest realizowane dzięki dofinansowaniu Biura Kultury m.st. Warszawy.

Olympic Dreams: Will Sochi Rehabilitate Russia’s Image?

In the light of the recent controversial law on homosexuality, President Putin welcomed everyone to next year's Winter Olympics in Sochi, regardless of their sexual orientation.

Yuri Kozyrev traveled to Sochi to document the transformation of the Olympic town as part of Russia's effort to modernize itself, while many parts of the country is still in decay.

Workshop in Kolkata – March 2014

Interesting opportunity by the workshopX team! I highly recommend working with these guys, they have huge experience, practical knowledge, are highly devoted to whatever they do and they are fun and good people too! There are many workshops in India on the market, but I can't remember one that would be prepared in such details and focused on a very specific targets. If you want to build a portfolio, create a complete story, gain experience, learn about editing or specifics and logistics of working on bigger projects - you might want to consider March in Kolkata. Places are limited!

Why Kolkata? Because it’s a place which doesn’t leave anybody indifferent. This huge melting pot of races, religions and cultures – where at the skyscrapers’ feet flows a stream of scenes known from the medieval paintings and the most luxurious cars of the world roam the streets marked with mud and feces – attacks all the senses at once. Man pulled rickshaws, open air workshops, makeshift factories and stalls, countless human crowds, goats, cows and yellow taxi cabs – it all pulses together in a street procession that never ends, passing through heat, sweat and exhaust fumes mixed with the omnipresent smell of spices. Kolkata is India condensed within a very strong pill, which opens your eyes for things you weren’t aware of before. It’s an experience that can change the way you see the whole world.
To take this strong dose of sensations and experiences may be a challenge, but for those who dare to try it, awaits a great reward – stepping into the whole realm of unique microcosms vibrating within one living metropolis.
