Great collection of photographers using Instagram

© Christopher Gianunzio // @christoper_gianunzio
There is a tendency among naysayers to refute Instagram's legitimacy, condemning it as nothing but a visualized Twitter. These wizards say it's not much more than a tool for self-promotion, navel gazing, or disguised brand building. That, despite Vik Muniz and Alex Praeger's Instagram prints garnering thousands of dollars in Aperture's 2013 benefit auction, there's no value in its incredibly low resolution. Despite this ongoing discourse, Instagram continues to be an impactful source of photographic discovery and influence, for some it's become its own distinct lens, and for others, it's become a sketchpad for larger ideas.

Have Your Work Critiqued by Bruce Gilden

Hey photo people! Would you like one of the world’s most acclaimed photographers to review your pictures? Send us your best work to be considered for VICE’s new photo-critique show, hosted by Bruce Gilden. In case you don't know, he's a Magnum photographer who won a Guggenheim Fellowship this year, photographed the Yakuza in Japan, and is generally regarded one of the badassest badasses in the business. In each episode of the show, Bruce will tell you if your work is transcendent or total crap, or somewhere in between, with the goal of promoting conversation around good photography.
The first two episodes of the series will focus on documentary photography and fine art photography. Submit five photos to photo@vice.com to be considered. Deadline is January 1, 2014. Try and shock us.

35 Magnum photographers give their advice to aspiring photographers... must read!

Jonas Bendiksen, INDIA. Mumbai. 2006. A little girl playing in Laxmi Chawl, a neighborhood of Dharavi. The little lightbulb

When did you first get excited about photography?

I first started in photography when I was about 14 or 15. I borrowed by father‘s SLR camera and very quickly I was taken by the process.Together with my father, I built a rudimentary BW darkroom in the bathroom at home. Over the years in high school, I ended up spendingmore and more time in there, photographing everything around me, developing the film, printing it, and back out photographing. By the time I finished high school I had to ask, Ok what do I do now? Find something else, or keep doing this, and give it a shot?

What advice would you give young photographers?

Throw yourself off a cliff. Figuratively speaking, I mean. Photography is a language. Think about what you want to use it to talk about. Whatare you interested in? What questions do you want to ask? Then, go for it, and throw yourself into talking about that topic, using photography. Make a body of work about that.

Jacob Aue Sobol "Arrivals And Departures" - Private View

"In the streets I try not to make any rational decisions about what to photograph and what not. I do not have any rules. I take pictures of everything on my way: a tree, a building, a shadow, a person. Sometimes it takes me two hours to get down a street, because there are so many things to photograph and people to meet.

When I have photographed in the street for a few days, I begin to feel sad. Even though my images from the streets can be close, photographing people in their own home, surrounded by the things that belong to them and make them feel safe is a total different experience. When I have photographed someone like this, I feel I have an experience to share with that person for the rest of my life.

The most bizarre question I ever got from a journalist was from a photo- Magazine asking me if the figures in my images were mannequins. The mannequin-series , he called it. He simply did not believe that it was possible to photograph humans like this. But the people I photograph are real, and I look at them, and I try to find something that connects us. I try to find a piece of myself in them. I feel warm when I look at two people desperately holding on to each other, saying: “I can't live without you.”

I admire all the people I take pictures of because they put themselves in a very vulnerable position. They trust me and I trust them, and it is important for me that there's a mutual understanding of this. That we're communicating in a way where it's not just 'me looking at them', but there's an exchange of emotions and life."
