The 50 Greatest Street Photographers Right Now /by Jennifer Wood/

The proliferation of Instagram-ready smartphones has been both a boon and a detriment to the art of street photography. On one hand, it has brought about a renewed interest in the innovators and pioneers of the genre—people like Eugène Atget, who is widely considered the godfather of the genre, or Henri Cartier-Bresson, who had a knack for catching people at the exact moment they did something interesting. On the other hand, it has convinced many wannabe shooters that anyone with a working cell phone and a decent filtering app has the ability to capture something beautiful. And maybe they’re right. But it doesn’t change the fact that there’s an art to this art, and that some folks are just more in tune with the rhythm of street photography than others.

Compiling any sort of “list” is always a challenging task, as the nature of being constrained by a number will inevitably mean that plenty of deserving talents will be left off (at least for this year). And when it comes to the 50 photographers featured here, we aimed to be as all-encompassing as possible; no restrictions were set in terms of geography, age, style, or experience. The only adamant criterion is that the artist is currently contributing to the craft.

The New York Times - 2013 The Year in Pictures

Wow. MUST SEE these 80 photographs. NY Times Year in Pictures 2013. Stunning, in all senses of the word. http://bit.ly/LCyip13

Stephen Hill's face for 15 seconds

Capt. Stephen Hill had a 23-year career in the Army and a secret that he felt he could never make public without throwing it all away.

THE HIDDEN MAN

America saw Stephen Hill's face for 15 seconds.
It took him a lifetime to show it.

December 29, 2013

I want so badly to one day have a family of my own with my soul mate, he wrote in his journal.
I really wonder if that's possible. I know you are out there. I know you think about me too. I am so hungry for compassion, not sex. I fall asleep every night and hug my pillows so tight pretending it's you. I don't have any idea what you look like. I don't care. How do I know what to say to you when I see you? How will I know it is you? I am so lonely waiting for you that I want to be extremely careful not to be blinded by someone pretending to be you.

Stephen and Josh Snyder-Hill walk hand-in-hand on a street in Columbus, Ohio. When Stephen left for Iraq in 2010, the couple had to hide under an airport escalator to say goodbye, while other soldiers were able to embrace their loved ones publicly

The Best Photographic Images of 2013

Gordon Parks
The best photographic images in D.C. museums and galleries this year offered a memorable confluence of visual elements, engaged in conceptual experimentation, and made clever use of atypical materials and techniques. They were not, in other words, antiquated. But among my five favorites, only one was made in 2013.
The others were from 1947, 1956, 1973, and 2002, a fact that should not imply a dearth of new, impressive work. I prefer to see it as evidence that visually daring photography of every era continues to command the respect of our city’s curators.

1. Gordon Parks, "Department Store, Birmingham Alabama, 1956," from Adamson Gallery’s “Gordon Parks: An American Lens.”

The Adamson Gallery’s retrospective spotlighted Parks’ documentary work in Jim Crow-era Alabama. While many of Parks’ images are no-nonsense, this image, taken on the sidewalk outside a department store, offers a rich and affecting split-second tableau. Using lush, period-atypical color, Parks captured a maraschino-cherry-red “Colored Entrance” neon sign, the expressive faces of an African-American mother and girl, and a series of bold diagonals, seamlessly melding art and morality.

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros and World Press Photo 2013

"I entered and never forgot the experience nor the name of the experience – it was an exhibit of World Press Photo winners. Years later, I am honored to have been given permission to put some of the photography from this year’s winners to an acoustic recording of a song that means a lot to me called Life Is Hard." How was 2013 for Joel Meyerowitz?

Joel Meyerowitz
Phaidon creatives look back on the year just gone and tell us about what they're going to be up to in 2014

As the year draws to a close we've caught up with a number of our Phaidon contributors and creatives (including Ferran Adrià, Martin Parr, Edmund de Waal and Bernhard Edmaier) and have asked them how 2013 was for them: what were the things that inspired them, when were they at their most creative and what do they have planned for 2014. We'll be bringing you their answers - one a day - up until the new year.

Finał Fotoprezentacji / Wystawa "WSTYD" Olgi Świąteckiej i Moniki Redisz

fot. Olga Świątecka
Towarzystwo Inicjatyw Twórczych "ę" zaprasza na finał Fotoprezentacji! Olga Świątecka i Monika Redzisz przez sześć miesięcy pracowały nad wspólnym projektem fotograficznym pt. "Wstyd".

W czwartek, 5 grudnia 2013 r. o godz. 19:00 otwieramy wystawę ich prac w galerii Nowe Miejsce (Al. Jerozolimskie 51 lok. 2) w Warszawie.

O wstydliwym projekcie opowiadają Olga Świątecka i Monika Redzisz

Olga: „Cześć, chcę sfotografować wstyd.” – z takimi słowami stawałyśmy w drzwiach naszych bohaterów, by skonfrontować ich (i nas same) z trudną rozmową.

The Best Photobooks of the Year: Martin Parr takes his pick

Dalston Anatomy, by Lorenzo Vitturi, published by SPBH, JibiJana

Photographer and photobook expert Martin Parr selects the best titles published this year

What a total treat! Here we have all the classic iconic images from this wonderful photographer who died only last year. On top of that, Agnes Sire has dug up many unknown Larrains that are as good as the ones we know and love. To supplement all of this is a most elegant design from the excellent Xavier Barral with stunning printing. It doesn't get much better than this.

PIGS

By Carlos Spottorno, published by RM Verlag/Phree
The ever enterprising RM Verlag publishers have come up with another gem here: PIGS, which stands for Portugal, Italy, Greece and Spain, the near bankrupt European countries. The format, based on the graphics of The Economist, is used to house the images of the above countries that are starting to fray at the edges.

Wernisaż - Polska w podróży Zofii Chomętowskiej - 18/12/2013

Zofia Chometowska
