Saul Leiter lived in an apartment on a quiet street in New York’s East Village, a neighborhood that evolved, during the six decades he lived there, nearly as much as Leiter himself. An undervalued photographer for most of his life, Leiter quietly amassed a body of work that has only recently begun receiving the credit it deserves. Since his death, last fall, the apartment has become Leiter’s de facto archive; Margit Erb, his gallery representative, and Anders Goldfarb, his long-time assistant, have spent months organizing the boxes of prints, negatives, portfolios, and books that he left haphazardly piled throughout the space.

Creating Neon Poetry With a Patient Camera

Now considered among the very best of the New York School street photographers, and a leading exponent in the artistic use of color film, Saul Leiter came to this acclaim rather late. While much of his most powerful work was made in the 1950s, it wasn’t truly rediscovered until nearly a half-century later.

That’s largely because of Mr. Leiter’s almost pathological modesty, as Tomas Leach’s documentary, “In No Great Hurry: 13 Lessons in Life With Saul Leiter,” amply demonstrates. “My own achievements are rather minor,” Mr. Leiter, seated in his cluttered East Village apartment, insists genially, questioning the need for a film. Half-jokingly, he says that if he doesn’t like it, he won’t allow its release.

“In No Great Hurry” is not a rigorous examination of Mr. Leiter’s art. Instead, between conversations, it floats some of his most ethereal, lustrous images, soft, layered scenes that glow with a watercolor’s warmth, sharp departures from the gritty cityscapes of his contemporaries. His best work seems both of the moment and timeless.

Saul Leiter, Photographer Who Captured New York’s Palette, Dies at 89

“Lots of people we think of as the famous photographers, particularly American photographers of the time, their photos are about something, quite overtly,” Mr. Leach, the filmmaker, said in an interview on Wednesday. “Saul’s were much more oblique than that.”

Unplanned and unstaged, Mr. Leiter’s photographs are slices fleetingly glimpsed by a walker in the city. People are often in soft focus, shown only in part or absent altogether, though their presence is keenly implied. Sensitive to the city’s found geometry, he shot by design around the edges of things: vistas are often seen through rain, snow or misted windows.

“A window covered with raindrops interests me more than a photograph of a famous person,” Mr. Leiter says in “In No Great Hurry.”

“So many photographers, they go out of their way to publicize themselves and to search out success,” he added. “Saul never did it. He photographed because he loved taking photographs.”

In the interview with Photographers Speak, Mr. Leiter set his role as a photographer against the backdrop of far more vital human events.

“I am not immersed in self-admiration,” he said. “When I am listening to Vivaldi or Japanese music or making spaghetti at 3 in the morning and realize that I don’t have the proper sauce for it, fame is of no use.”

An intimate and personal film, In No Great Hurry follows Saul as he deals with the triple burden of clearing an apartment full of memories, becoming world famous in his 80's and fending off a pesky filmmaker.
