Capa in Color

This exhibition presents Robert Capa’s color work for the first time. Capa regularly used color film from the 1940s until his death in 1954. Some of these photographs were published in magazines of the day, but the majority have never been printed, seen, or even studied. Over the years, this aspect of Capa’s career has virtually been forgotten. With over 100 contemporary color prints by the famous photojournalist, Capa in Color presents this work an integral part of his post-war career and fundamental in remaining relevant to magazines. Drawn entirely from ICP’s collection, including contextual publications and personal papers, the exhibition presents a fascinating new look at this master of black-and-white photography during his centennial year. This exhibition is organized by ICP Curator Cynthia Young.

Take Flight!

"Right Time Right Place" has been selected to participate in "Take Flight". The exhibtion will be on display from March 2 to 29, 2014 at The Kiernan Gallery, Lexington, Virginia, USA.

Humans have always desired to take to the skies. Fascinated by flight, we construct machines to propel us into the air; from kites and hot air balloons to supersonic jets. We admire birds and costume ourselves with wings, imagining what it would be like to fly without assistance.

Sally Davies: Lower East Side /via Lenscratch/

Sally Davies has been chronicling the Lower East Side for decades, and as someone who has witnessed the changing landscape of the LES over the years, I was fascinated to see how much remains the same. Sally recently had an exhibition at  the Bernarducci Meisel Gallery in NYC titled Photographs of the Lower East Side.

Sally was born in Winnipeg, Canada, graduated from the Ontario College of Art and Design, and currently lives and works in New York City. Her photographs have been featured in the New York Times, Lenscratch, the UK Daily Mail, and PDF online. She is the author of the widely acclaimed “McDonalds Happy Meal Project” that went viral in 2010.Her work is in the collections of Harvard Business School, Sarah Jessica Parker, Debra Winger, Michael Patrick King, Jane Holzer, Gary Lightbody Snow Patrol.

She received her MFA from UC San Diego and is interested in in looking at an American cultural territory colored by notions of identity, performance and glamour. “I live in LA and I like it here. I like that the palm trees were all planted at the same time. I like that Gloria Swanson played herself in Sunset Boulevard. I like that she had it, and then she lost it, and she didn’t know the difference. I like that she buried her dead chimp in a satin lined casket. Making pictures in LA is good. Photo LA 2014 Stuns Opening Night Making It The Best Year Ever

Photo LA 2014 opened last week at the top of its game. Los Angeles Photographic Art Exposition 23rd annual event took place at the Historic LA Mart Building in Downtown Los Angeles. Along with LA Art Show, Downtown LA is rapidly becoming the mecca for LA artists and collectors to gather for quality events celebrating LA’s Visual Art World. This was my first time ever visiting the LA Mart, a beautiful building nestled in underdeveloped parts of DTLA, amongst warehouses and bodegas, an area that will soon experience its fill of street art, fingers crossed.

Allen Henson Is Being Sued for Photographing a Model Topless on the Empire State Building Observation Deck

The owners of the Empire State Building are suing controversial photographer Allen Henson for $1 million after he took a few photos of a topless model on the landmark's observation deck this past summer. The lawsuit claims that Henson did not obtain permission for the shoot and that he damaged the building's rep as a "safe and secure family friendly tourist attraction." They also said that Henson's stunt was "potentialy dangerous" and want to have him banned from the site.

Jesse Hazelip Critiques the American Prison System in His New Exhibition at Jonathan LeVine Gallery

When I visited Jonathan LeVine Gallery the day before the opening of Jesse Hazelip’s “Love Lock: Cycle of Violence,” the gallery was abuzz with pre-installation fervor. Framed ballpoint drawings lay, meticulous arranged, on the gallery floor, later to be made vertical. Other works—printed wheatpaste cutouts on bold stenciled backgrounds and reclaimed wood panels from an abandoned prison in Upstate New York—leaned gently against the walls. “Love Lock,” documenting the injustices of the American prison system, is Hazelip’s first solo exhibition in New York.

I want so badly to one day have a family of my own with my soul mate, he wrote in his journal.

I really wonder if that's possible. I know you are out there. I know you think about me too. I am so hungry for compassion, not sex. I fall asleep every night and hug my pillows so tight pretending it's you. I don't have any idea what you look like. I don't care. How do I know what to say to you when I see you? How will I know it is you? I am so lonely waiting for you that I want to be extremely careful not to be blinded by someone pretending to be you.

Saul Leiter, Photographer Who Captured New York’s Palette, Dies at 89

“Lots of people we think of as the famous photographers, particularly American photographers of the time, their photos are about something, quite overtly,” Mr. Leach, the filmmaker, said in an interview on Wednesday. “Saul’s were much more oblique than that.”

Unplanned and unstaged, Mr. Leiter’s photographs are slices fleetingly glimpsed by a walker in the city. People are often in soft focus, shown only in part or absent altogether, though their presence is keenly implied. Sensitive to the city’s found geometry, he shot by design around the edges of things: vistas are often seen through rain, snow or misted windows. 

“A window covered with raindrops interests me more than a photograph of a famous person,” Mr. Leiter says in “In No Great Hurry.”

“So many photographers, they go out of their way to publicize themselves and to search out success,” he added. “Saul never did it. He photographed because he loved taking photographs.” 

In the interview with Photographers Speak, Mr. Leiter set his role as a photographer against the backdrop of far more vital human events. 

“I am not immersed in self-admiration,” he said. “When I am listening to Vivaldi or Japanese music or making spaghetti at 3 in the morning and realize that I don’t have the proper sauce for it, fame is of no use.”
