The 2014 program includes portfolio reviews, seminars and workshops as well as artist talks, exhibitions and PhotoMarket. This is an event for both professional photographers and amateurs, as well as for the regular photographic exhibition visitor.

WHAT IS HAPPENING?
The 2014 program includes portfolio reviews, seminars and workshops as well as exhibitions and PhotoMarket. This is an event for both professional photographers and amateurs, as well as for the regular photographic exhibition visitor. 

 

PORTFOLIO REVIEWS
The Portfolio Reviews are for established or up-and-coming photographers, wanting to expand their international contacts with world-renown institutions, galleries and book publishers. In this section, 12 internationally renowned experts from the field of photography (gallery owners, curators, editors, etc.) all of whom can make a difference to working photographers, will review portfolios over the course of two days. Participants will be scheduled to have a minimum of eight 20-minute one-on-one reviews with these experts. Applicants will be pre-approved by a jury.

 

MASTERS OF PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOPS
Swedish photographer Anders Petersen, fashion photographer Paolo Roversi and Magnum photographer Christopher Anderson were hosting workshops within the Masters of Photography Workshop Series 2013. More information about the Masters of Photography Workshop Series 2014 will come soon.

Join Anders Petersen for a challenging and inspiring 5-day workshop at Fotografiska, April 2 - April 6, 2014. It will be five intense days of doing, feeling and talking about photography. Each afternoon you will get a photo assignments that you complete before the next morning when the discussions and critique take place. You are expected to work hard, and to challenge yourself and your photographic method, under the guidance of Anders Petersen. This is not a technical workshop. The workshop is in English.

 

SUBJECTIVE PHOTOGRAPHY

This workshop is about approaching photography from a subjective viewpoint where the images you take not only tell stories about someone else or somewhere else, but also say something about the photographer. But it is also very much about being bold and finding your own photographic voice (and eye) – working alone but besides and in dialogue with other participants and with Anders Petersen.

"Renesansowy Street Art" (by Rzeczpospolita)

W ubiegłym roku (2011) Kudela zaistniała jako street artist na rynku polskim serią murali "Renesansowy Street Art" na warszawskiej Pradze. Głównym założeniem projektu było odtworzenie 10 arcydzieł światowego malarstwa przy współudziale współczesnych mieszkańców miasta.

Projekt był częścią powstałego pod egidą Ministerstwa Kultury i Dziedzictwa Narodowego przedsięwzięcia Jacka Schmidta „Otwarta pracownia wizytująca – znaki miasta". Każda z prac Kudeli była kolażem, w którym oryginalne fragmenty popularnego obrazu wkomponowane zostały w fotografie współczesnych.

To zderzenie renesansowego neoplatonizmu, który chciał poprowadzić ludzi ku szczęściu przez miłość i piękno, z warszawską Pragą, dzielnicą zakodowaną w zbiorowej, miejskiej świadomości jako miejsce złe i niebezpieczne.Zmiana kontekstu dzieł miała z jednej strony charakter prowokacji, a z drugiej osadziła projekt w bardzo konkretnej przestrzeni praskiej.

Na przykład w „Wiośnie", będącej przetworzeniem obrazu Boticellego, w rolę trzech Gracji wcieliły się trzy pensjonariuszki praskiego Domu Dziennego Pobytu.

Dla Kudeli istotne są reakcje widzów – przechodniów, mieszkańców światowych metropolii i współartystów zajmujących się street artem - na rozklejone w przestrzeni urbanistycznej prace. Ich reakcje dokumentowała we wcześniejszych projektach w Paryżu, a rezultaty stały się kolejnym ciekawym „projektem w projekcie". - Wychodząc do miasta – mówi Kudela – przede wszystkim wychodzę do widza, szeroko rozumianego odbiorcy. - Używam miasta jako swoistej galerii i staram się nawiązać dialog intelektualny z potencjalnym odbiorcą moich prac. Ale równocześnie ściany, domy, ulice, architektura miasta oraz jego mieszkańcy są przedłużeniem moich obrazów i ich integralną częścią. Staram się aby moje obrazy były spójne z miejscem i wnosiły w nie nowe wartości estetyczne - opowiada artystka.

Irena Jarosińska Pismo obrazkowe/Irena Jarosińska Picture Writing

Irena Jarosińska: pismo obrazkowe to album prezentujący twórczość jednej z najciekawszych polskich fotografek XX wieku – artystki i pionierki fotoreportażu kobiecego. Jarosińska (1924–1996) była silną i niezależną osobowością artystyczną, fotoreporterką m.in. prestiżowych pism „Świat” i „Polska”, inicjatorką wielu wystaw, happeningów i dyskusji, mentorką młodych fotografów. Jej ogromna spuścizna fotograficzna, licząca ponad 40 tysięcy zdjęć, po latach zapomnienia trafiła do Archiwum Fotografii Ośrodka KARTA.

W albumie zostały zaprezentowane trzy główne wątki twórczości Jarosińskiej. Była zawodowo i prywatnie związana ze środowiskiem artystycznym: portretowała poetów, malarzy awangardowych, aktorów, fotografów i muzyków. Przez kilka dekad była w samym centrum życia kulturalnego, z jednej strony śledząc je jako fotografka, a z drugiej współtworząc. Jeden z rozdziałów albumu (Na temat) został osnuty wokół miejsc ważnych dla polskiego życia artystycznego – skupiających twórców różnych dziedzin, jak np. mieszkanie-pracownia malarza Henryka Stażewskiego, a także teatry Tadeusza Kantora czy Mirona Białoszewskiego.

Równolegle w albumie zostało pokazane, równie osobiste, spojrzenie artystki na przestrzeń Warszawy lat 50. (rozdział Fragmentaryczność). Jarosińska była czujną obserwatorką, wykraczającą daleko poza tworzenie dokumentacji fotograficznej – stąd w albumie wątek frapujących migawek z życia ulic, zamykanych w kadrach pozornej codzienności.

Dopełnieniem obrazu twórczości Jarosińskiej są zdjęcia z jej pracy fotoreporterskiej (rozdział Na temat) – formy bardziej narracyjne, powstające na zlecenie redakcji czasopism, nie pozbawione przy tym wrażliwości charakteryzującej jej „prywatne” fotografie.

W albumie znalazły się również teksty autorstwa znakomitych fotografów i krytyków: Chrisa Niedenthala, Tadeusza Rolke, Anki Ptaszkowskiej i Kuby Dąbrowskiego, poświęcone twórczości Ireny Jarosińskiej oraz różnym aspektom fotografii i życia artystycznego okresu PRL.

Wystawa jest wyprawą do wnętrza i duszy Rolkego, pokazaniem nieznanego oblicza autora kojarzonego

do tej pory głównie z pracami reportażowymi i dokumentalnymi. Składa się na nią wybór zdjęć – krajobrazu, martwej natury, człowieka – oraz listów autora.

Tadeusz Rolke, nazywany nestorem polskiej fotografii reportażowej oraz dokumentalistą wielokulturowym,
jest autorem wielu wystaw zbiorowych i indywidualnych (m.in. „Fotografowałem lata sześćdziesiąte i nie tylko...”, „Rozproszenie”, „Wir waren hier”, „Studio Rolke”, „Czas wolny. Fotografie”). Współpracował z prestiżowymi pismami w Polsce i za granicą (Stern, die Zeit, der Spiegel), zajmował się fotografią mody, jego zdjęcia można zobaczyć w albumach. Wykładał na Uniwersytecie Warszawskim i Warszawskiej Szkole Fotografii, został odznaczony Złotym Medalem „Zasłużony Kulturze Gloria Artis”.

Saul Leiter, Photographer Who Captured New York’s Palette, Dies at 89

“Lots of people we think of as the famous photographers, particularly American photographers of the time, their photos are about something, quite overtly,” Mr. Leach, the filmmaker, said in an interview on Wednesday. “Saul’s were much more oblique than that.”

Unplanned and unstaged, Mr. Leiter’s photographs are slices fleetingly glimpsed by a walker in the city. People are often in soft focus, shown only in part or absent altogether, though their presence is keenly implied. Sensitive to the city’s found geometry, he shot by design around the edges of things: vistas are often seen through rain, snow or misted windows. 

“A window covered with raindrops interests me more than a photograph of a famous person,” Mr. Leiter says in “In No Great Hurry.”

“So many photographers, they go out of their way to publicize themselves and to search out success,” he added. “Saul never did it. He photographed because he loved taking photographs.” 

In the interview with Photographers Speak, Mr. Leiter set his role as a photographer against the backdrop of far more vital human events. 

“I am not immersed in self-admiration,” he said. “When I am listening to Vivaldi or Japanese music or making spaghetti at 3 in the morning and realize that I don’t have the proper sauce for it, fame is of no use.”

Legendary American photographer Stephen Shore is training his lens on digital media with his first eBook

To say that Stephen Shore's career is era-spanning is putting it lightly: at 17, he fell in with the Warhol crowd and photographed Andy, Edie Sedgwick and the other bright young things of the Factory; in his 20s, he photographed his road trip from Manhattan to Amarillo, Texas in 1972 and pioneered the use of color in fine-art photography while doing so; now four decades into his career, he has just released his first eBook on iTunes, a moving image iBook that captures New York as only Shore sees it.

Something + Nothing, his first solo show in London for over six years, opens at Sprueth Magers, incorporating classic images from his early career as well as work from his new series, Ukraine, which captures Eastern European Holocaust survivors in their homes, villages and cities. As always, Shore always has his eye trained on the constantly moving, mutable future. Dazed speaks to the legendary photographer about the digital medium and his ever-evolving work.

The lost boys of Bucharest

Exploring the generation time forgot in post-Communist Bucharest

Fashion photographer and filmmaker, Joost Vandebrug’s latest project sees him roaming the streets and tunnels of Bucharest. In a world devoid of parental guidance, the stereotypical tropes are there; drug abuse, run-ins with the law, gang-mentality, yet they are eclipsed and often subverted by the familial bond between these so-called ‘Lost Boys’ - Bucharest’s youth left behind after the fallout of Communism. Led by a myserious tattooed character known as 'Bruce Lee', the group make up just four of an estimated thousand homeless children who end up forming tunnel communities together. 

Vandebrug has been documenting the lives of these homeless boys since 2011 and is now gathering together over 6000 stills and 30 hours of HD footage, all ready to be aired but in need of a financial boost. Through Kickstarter, Vandebrug and DUST magazine, who will be the art-producers for the project, are looking for pledges to make the book, “Cinci Lei”, a reality.

Fashion's anti-Helmut Newton passed away last Thursday. Here she is in her own words.

Deborah Turbeville died last Thursday in Manhattan, New York, at the age of 81. Turbeville first gained acclaim in the early 1970s for her dark, moodily avant-garde approach to fashion photography, which stood in stark contrast to contemporaries like Helmut Newton and Guy Bourdin. She spoke to Dazed for the July 2013 issue on her anti-sleek aesthetic. 

Turbeville’s photographs may evoke wistful memories of bygone times, but she shudders at the word “nostalgia”. The subdued romance and languid elegance of her images have a timelessness that has made her one of the last half-century’s defining fashion photographers. After arriving in New York from Boston, Turbeville became a fashion editor for the likes of Harper’s Bazaar and Mademoiselle. She began taking pictures in 1966, soon developing a soft-focus style that stood out from the sleek aesthetic of contemporaries like Bourdin and Newton. Turbeville’s intuitively rebellious work, ambiguously positioned between fashion and fine-art photography, has had a lasting influence on both fields.

Grzegorz Wełnicki: Jedyne co potrafię to robić zdjęcia, więc krzyczę dzięki temu medium

- Przygotowując się z Wojtkiem Tochmanem do wydania książki "Eli, Eli", mieliśmy świadomość, że wywoła ona kontrowersje, bo choć jest piękna, to bardzo trudna. Traktuje o problemach, z którymi współczesny świat nie umie sobie radzić, więc często udaje, że one nie istnieją. Naturalnie, przekraczamy pewne granice, ale właśnie po to, by ten stan rzeczy zmienić - mówi Grzegorz Wełnicki, autor zdjęć.

Jak się zdobywa zaufanie ludzi tak głęboko doświadczonych przez los, że pozwalają obcemu fotografowi z Europy wejść w swoje życie. W ciągu dwóch lat spędzonych na Filipinach zrobiłem tylko 18 zdjęć. To nie jest oszałamiający wynik (śmiech – przyp.red.), ale wynika z mojego sposobu pracy. Nie potrafiłbym jak newsowiec przyjechać, zrobić setki zdjęć bez żadnych emocji i wyjechać. Ja jadę do tych ludzi, przede wszystkim dlatego, że chcę się z nimi spotkać, a nie „zrobić materiał”. Oczywiście, jeśli wszystko się tak poskłada, że zdjęcia jednak powstaną – to świetnie, ale ja nie muszę z nimi wrócić. Nikt tych zdjęć u mnie nie zamawia. Po przyjeździe bardzo długo w ogóle nie korzystam z aparatu. Żyję z ludźmi, rozmawiam, przygotowujemy razem posiłki. Poznaję tamtejszą społeczność, a ona mnie, bo to budowanie więzi działa w obie strony. Decyzję o zrobieniu zdjęcia też podejmujemy wspólnie i tylko wtedy, gdy obie strony tego chcą. Ja się u nich po prostu dobrze czuję, a zdjęcia są w pewien sposób dodatkiem.

Lee Friedlander - America by Car

Foam proudly presents a solo exhibition by the American photographer Lee Friedlander (1934, US). This exhibition features the series America by Car and The New Cars 1964. The automobile has come to symbolize the American dream and the associated urge for freedom. It is therefore no surprise that cars play a central role in both series, now receiving their first showing in the Netherlands.

Road Trip

 
America by Car documents Friedlander's countless wanderings around the United States over the past decade. In this he follows a trail laid down by numerous photographers, film makers and writers like Robert Frank, Stephen Shore and Jack Kerouac. Friedlander nevertheless succeeds in giving the theme of the American road trip his own very original twist, using the cars' windscreens and dashboards to frame the familiar American landscape, as well as exploiting the reflections found in their wing and rear view mirrors. It is a simple starting point which results in complex and layered images that are typical for Friedlander's visual language.

He also has a sharp eye for the ironic detail. He makes free use of text on billboards and symbols on store signs to add further meaning to his work. His images are so layered that new information continues to surface with every glance, making America byCar a unique evocation of contemporary America.   

 

The exhibition is organized in collaboration with Fraenkel Gallery, San Francisco and Timothy Taylor Gallery, London.

William Klein in Foam

Foam finishes 2013 with a unique retrospective exhibition of the work of William Klein. The entire museum will be dedicated to the life and work of this legendary photographer, filmmaker and designer.  The career of William Klein (b. 1928) spans more than sixty years. His work had an immense influence on photography during the second half of the twentieth century. The exhibition gives ample coverage to Klein's ground-breaking work in New York in the 1950s while also displaying work made in Rome, Moscow and Tokyo. His work for Vogue shows Klein was a great innovator in the field of fashion photography. In addition to his early experiments with abstract photography, his large-scale, painted-on contact prints that he's been creating in more recent years will also be on view in Foam. 

A selection of Klein's feature films and documentaries will be shown in Foam's 3h library space. This exceptional William Klein retrospective exhibition has been curated by Foam and can be seen exclusively in Amsterdam.

William Klein will be present at the opening of the exhibition on Thursday, 19 December 2013.

Patrick Demarchelier sfotografował Nicole Kidman, jako Grace Kelly

Patrick Demarchelier jest autorem sesji, w której Nicole Kidman wciela się w postać Grace Kelly - już niedługo do kin trafi film "Grace of Monaco" z udziałem aktorki. Fotografie przenoszą nas w świat księżnej Monako, ikony stylu lat 50., o urodzie chłodnej blondynki, pełnej pasji i elegancji, przez Alberta Hitchcocka nazwanej "wulkanem pokrytym śniegiem".

Urodzony w 1943 roku Francuz ma na koncie setki sesji modowych i reklamowych - jego fotografie zazwyczaj nie budzą kontrowersyjnych skojarzeń, nie prowokują. Patrick Demarchelier potrafił wykształcić w swoich zdjęciach styl i klasę, które wyniosły go ponad "przeciętnych" fotografów reklamowych. Kobiety, a także mężczyźni, na jego fotografiach są zawsze piękni, zmysłowi, ale nigdy nie wyzywający.

Od Audrey Hepburn do Nicole Kidman - legenda fotografii podsumowuje 55 lat pracy

Amerykański fotograf Douglas Kirkland, w wieku 24 lat rozpoczął współpracę z magazynem "Look". Przepustką do sławy okazała się jego fotografia Marilyn Monroe, wykonana w 1961 roku, na 25-lecie pisma. Zaczął fotografować dla magazynu "Life". Przed jego obiektywem stawały takie gwiazdy jak Coco Chanel, Marlene Dietrich, Brigitte Bardot, Elizabeth Taylor, Sophia Loren, Catherine Deneuve, Morgan Freeman, Leonardo DiCaprio, Michael Jackson, Mick Jagger, Sting i wiele, wiele innych.

"Nie wolno dać się zastraszyć. Ja też byłem bardzo niepewny, nie wiedziałem, czy uda mi się coś osiągnąć, każdy okres wydaje się trudny do uzyskania sukcesu w fotografii. Dziś, każdy mówi, że jest to wyjątkowo trudne, ale ja wiem, że wciąż istnieją sposoby, aby odnieść sukces na rynku fotografii. Masz do czynienia z tym co jest - to jest Twój czas, wykorzystaj go. To co zrobiłem w latach 60. było zupełnie inne niż to, co robię dziś, to tak jak gdybym zaczynał od nowa" - mówi fotograf.

Kalendarz Pirelli 2014

HELMUT NEWTON / PIRELLI CALENDAR /PAP/EPA

Kalendarz Pirelli 2014 wypełniony jest fotografiami Helmuta Newtona, które miały zostać wykorzystane do wydania kalendarza w roku 1986. Niemiecki fotograf na niepublikowanych dotąd zdjęciach ponownie pokazał dominację kobiet, ich monumentalne piękno oraz charakter. "Silne kobiety zawsze mnie podniecały" - powiedział Helmut Newton.

W 1985 roku, brytyjski i włoski oddział Pirelli zleciły wykonanie zdjęć do edycji na rok 1986. Fotograf Bert Stern otrzymał zlecenie od Brytyjczyków, a Helmut Newton od Włochów. Postało spore zamieszanie, co do wyboru czyje fotografie zostaną opublikowane. Przypadkowo Helmut Newton porzucił zlecenie w trakcie realizacji z powodu problemów osobistych i w roku 1986 w kalendarzu znalazły się zdjęcia Bert Stern.

 

Premiera kalendarza Pirelli 2014 z okazji swoich 50. urodzin miała miejsce w Mediolanie 22 listopada br. Tegoroczna edycja zawiera 12 czarno-białych fotografii oaz  28 ujęć zza kulis, które były wykonane w Monte Carlo i Chianti. Helmut Newton realizując zlecenie na fotografie do kalendarza na rok 1986 dodatkowo otrzymał zadanie, aby na każdym ujęciu był widoczny produkt Pirelli.
